𝐵𝑦 𝐶ℎ𝑎𝑟𝑙𝑖𝑒 𝐵𝑙𝑎𝑐𝑘𝑤𝑜𝑜𝑑
Falmouth Rugby Club recently hosted a sensational awards night at their clubhouse, bringing players and supporters together to commemorate the achievements and contributions of their exceptional athletes. The event, which had an exciting 80s/90s theme, was an unforgettable evening as the club recognised its standout performers in various categories.
The awards ceremony commenced by honouring the club’s touch rugby players. Eliza was awarded the title of Most Improved Touch Player, a well-deserved recognition for her remarkable progress. Dan Jones, on the other hand, was honoured as the Best Player in this thrilling non contact form of the game by coach James Bunt.
Moving on to the women’s rugby awards, Mary Ellyn’s dedication and improvement were acknowledged as she was named the Most Improved player. Cassandra Callahan’s exceptional skills and contributions earned her the prestigious Coaches Player award from Lexxie Williams. Abi Sanders-Crook, a true asset to the squad, was voted by her peers as the Players Player, reflecting her outstanding performance and valued presence on the field. Anna Jones received the Spirit of FalmouthRugby Club award, symbolizing her unwavering commitment and positive influence within the team.
The men’s senior team awards generated great anticipation and excitement. Jon Baglow, a true leader and role model, despite being injured for much of the season was rightfully named Club Captain, demonstrating his exceptional leadership qualities and off field work. Treave Rowe’s impressive skills and valuable contributions to the 1st XV earned him the Coaches Player title. Rowan Lawrence, on the other hand, was honored as the Players Player in the 1st XV, a testament to his exceptional performance and the respect he has earned from his fellow teammates over the last few seasons, a true sportsman with much potential.
The coveted top try scorer award went to the talented Phil Hinchley, whose attacking prowess consistently shone throughout the season. Harvey Penhallurick claimed the title of Top Point Scorer, showcasing his exceptional kicking abilities and accuracy. Rhys Barnes was recognised as the Most Improved player in the 2nd XV, displaying his dedication and growth as a player. Bryn Owen, who is steadily learning in the centers of the 2nd XV, was acknowledged as the Captains Player by Tug Wilson. Chris “Sandy” Sanders, was voted by his peers, and was honoured as the Players Player in the 2nd XV, a true testament to his impact and commitment, and whom will always be remembered following his tragic heart attack. His award was presented to wife Jo and daughter Georgia. Who announced thanks to the rugby community for having raised £400 for the British Heart Foundation.
The awards night was an overwhelming success, celebrating the achievements and hard work of Falmouth Rugby Club’s players in the 2023/24 season. With the 80s/90s theme adding a nostalgic and fun atmosphere, the evening was filled with laughter, camaraderie, and memories that will last a lifetime. The club looks forward to the upcoming season, building upon the success and unity showcased at the awards night, and continuing to play its role in the heart of the community.
In a heartfelt statement, Tom Spiller, the Director of Rugby, expressed his gratitude for Leo Taine’s contribution to the club, who is moving away. Leo joined the club in mid-September, seeking to be a part of a community club during his work tenure in the UK. Described as a great young man with a mature head on his shoulders, Leo quickly proved to be an exceptional rugby player and an asset to Falmouth. His energy, enthusiasm, and dedication to training and teamwork had a profound impact on the squad, both on and off the field. Tom Spiller wished Leo all the best for his future endeavors, expressing his gratitude for his support during the season. Leo will always be cherished as a part of Falmouth Rugby history and will be welcomed back with open arms. The club bids him farewell with the traditional phrase “Fair seas and following winds, my friend.”
