St. Agnes 66 - EAgles 2Xv 10

A Weekend of Growth and Camaraderie
By Gupta Singh

As the 24/25 season kicked off, Falmouth Rugby Club proudly fielded two sides, showcasing the importance of providing opportunities for players to learn, grow, and develop their skills. The Eagles 2XV took to the field against St. Agnes in the Counties 3 Tribute Cornwall league, demonstrating the spirit of rugby even in challenging circumstances.

Despite showing up with the bare minimum to fulfill the fixture, the Eagles faced adversity head-on when injuries reduced their number to thirteen. However, the team showed remarkable resilience, refusing to concede defeat and playing the full eighty minutes with unwavering determination. New signing Ethan Pattison stepped in at number eight, bringing much-needed experience and structure to this team. His presence not only helped stabilise the side but also served as a reminder of the importance of blending seasoned players with relative newcomers.

The veterans of our club played a crucial role in this match. Co-chairs Danny Trick and James Instance were instrumental in contributing points for Falmouth. Tricky, playing his first game as a tight head prop after decades as an imposter in the backs, transitioned well, exemplifying the ‘full circle’ of life in rugby, sneaking in a well worked forwards try as the pack drove him over the line from 10 metres out. James demonstrated his silkworm skills and leadership at fly half, successfully scoring one penalty and one conversion. Although the team faced a tough loss of 66-10, there were many positives to take away from the experience. Olly Jones and Kenny Terrell returned back to the frey and looked dangerous in open play. While new comers Jon Henwood and Tom Dearling looked fresh in attack.

What truly stood out was the camaraderie, friendship, and respect displayed on and off the field. St. Agnes proved to be gracious hosts, embodying the spirit of sportsmanship that is at the heart of rugby. This match served as a reminder that the essence of the game transcends the final score; it’s about the connections we forge and the lessons we learn along the way while ultimately getting people game time on a Saturday.

As we reflect on this weekend, it’s essential to acknowledge the vital role that experienced players play in guiding younger teammates. Their knowledge, skills, and insights are invaluable for fostering growth and ensuring the future of our sport. We encourage all players, especially those who may have hung their boots up during covid or who feel they are nearing the end of their playing careers, to pass on their expertise and inspire the next generation.

If you’re feeling inspired to step back into rugby and contribute to this vibrant community, we invite you to bring your game back to Falmouth. For more information, please contact us at headofrugby@falmouthrugbyclub.co.uk
